James Sorie Samura is a lecturer, researcher, consultant and a development analyst. James has a B.Sc in Hospitality and Tourism and M.Sc. in Tourism and Development. James is a Sierra Leonean and lives in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
SIGNIFICANT SOCIOCULTURAL TRAITS OF THE PEOPLE OF SIERRA LEONE
The sociocultural traits of the people of Sierra Leone ranges from secret societies, chieftaincy, patrilineal descent, and farming culture (Sesay, S.M. n.d.). Nightlife, cooking style, marriage and religion inclusive.
Christianity, Islamic and traditionist are the religions mostly observed in Sierra Leone. Two-thirds of the population are Muslims, while one-fourth are Christians (Sesay, S.M., n.d. and Sierra Leone 2013 International Religious Freedom Report).
Christians observed Christmas and Easter holidays, while Muslims observed Id al-Fitr and Id al-Adha holidays. The day Sierra Leone gained freedom from the colonial masters is also observed as a national holiday on April 27 of every year.
The people of Sierra Leone are known for their cultural and social life of dancing, carving, fishing, hunting, weaving of clothes, painting and gara tie dying.
Cultural institutions in Sierra Leone include the National Museums, the railway museum, Bunce Island, Old Fourahbay College, the universities, the schools, the churches, the Mosques and traditional shrines.
