Definition of Hospitality

According to the definitions from the Oxford Languages, hospitality is defined as the friendly, generous reception and the entertainments of guests, visitors and strangers.

Hospitality Industry

The hospitality industry is a subsector of the service industry that includes the lodging (accommodation), events and food and beverages. It also includes transportation and tourism when designed to entertain.

 Importance of the Hospitality Industry

Hotel and their Classification

Hotel:         A hotel is a commercial accommodation facility that provides lodging, food, meeting and conference services and as well as accommodation services.

Hotel Classification: Hotels are classified using different methods but at this level, we will classified hotels as:

Size: Small size hotels, medium size hotel and big size/luxury hotels

Target Market:

  • Business hotels: Located in business areas and cater for business travelers
  • Airport hotels: Located in airports
  • Suites hotels: Having separated living and bed room and suited for professionals
  • Extended stay hotels: Provided with kitchen facility in room and meant for longer stay but not up to a month
  • Serviced apartment: Meant for a longer stay up to a month or a year and provided with seldom housekeeping facility
  • Resorts hotels: Isolated hotels and have recreational facilities
  • Bed and Breakfast/Home stay hotels: Only provide lodging and breakfast
  • Timeshare/ Vacation: Designed for vacationists
  • Casino hotels: Have a gambling facilities
  •  Conference and convention centres: For meetings, conferences and conventions

Level of Service

  • World class service: Luxury hotels, five stars or diamond hotels
  • Mid-range service: Medium hotels, four to three stars or diamond hotels
  • Budget/ limited service: small hotels, one star or diamond hotels

Ownership and Affiliation

  • Independents hotels: May be owned by morethan one entity but operate on its own
  • Single owner hotel: Owned by a single entity
  • Chain hotels: Operate as a group of hotel with a brand name

Hotel Franchise:

It is the act of using/ or right to use another business name and model for a stipulated time. It helps in expanding business and building a distribution channel for products and services in a legal and legitimate business relationship bind by a license.

The company or business giving the license is the franchisor while the company/business using it is the franchisee.
